Have you been the victim of sexual assault or relationship abuse?  Would you like to get information for a friend or loved one?

UCIPD CAREs was designed as a place where students, faculty and staff can drop in to ask questions or to gather information about reporting options related to relationship violence and sexual assault.   This free and confidential drop-in group allows you to speak with representatives from CARE and the UCI Police Department, with no obligation to make a report.  You can also ask your questions online.

 clothesline

The Clothesline Project

April 19-21, 2010
Gateway Plaza

The Clothesline Project is a display of t-shirts made by survivors of sexual assault and their loved ones. The various types of sexual violence are represented by different colored t-shirts - containing graphic messages and illustrations symbolizing the survivors' experiences. The project raises awareness about the prevalence and impact that sexual violence has on our society and allows survivors an opportunity to break the silence by telling their story.

Take Back the Night

April 21, 2010

Take Back the Night at UCI includes a candlelight vigil, march, and rally to raise awareness of sexual assault and to honor survivors.  Campus and community organizations sponsor interactive, educational booths, all aimed at addressing sexual violence and abuse.  In the past, live music and artistic displays have added to the positive energy of this powerful annual event.  The evening draws to a close with a speak-out from those who wish to share their experiences.

 denimday

Denim Day at UCI

April 21, 2010

Denim Day began as a result of a Italian Supreme Court decision to release a man from rape charges because the victim was wearing jeans.  In a statement by the Head Judge, he argued, "Because the victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them...  and by removing the jeans... it was no longer rape but consensual sex."  Enraged by the verdict, the women in the Italian Parliament launched into immediate action and protested by wearing jeans on the steps of the Italian Parliament building.  This call to action motivated and emboldened the California Senate and Assembly to do the same, and a movement was born.

Wear jeans on April 21st to speak out against sexual assault, and help change people's perceptions about violence against women, men and children.

 redflag

UCI Red Flag Project

April 22-23, 2010

Each year, roughly 3,000 flags wave in the lawn by the UCI flagpoles.  The number of flags represents one fourth of the number of female students at UCI.  This is the number of women, according to national statistics, at UC Irvine that may be the victims of sexual assault or attempted assault before graduating from college.

This visual display is intended to raise awareness about the prevalence of sexual violence and encourage students, faculty and staff to stand up against such violence while looking for ways to reduce risk for themselves and others in the UCI community.
